eSIM Not Working Abroad? Common Issues and Easy Fixes

eSIM Not Working Abroad? Common Issues and Easy Fixes

You land, switch off airplane mode and… nothing loads. When your eSIM is not working abroad, it's usually not a problem with the eSIM itself. In most cases, a setting needs a quick change: the eSIM line is off, data roaming is disabled or your phone is still using your home SIM for data.

This guide walks you through the most common reasons a travel eSIM is not working, quick checks to run right after landing and step-by-step fixes for iPhone and Android. Still setting up? See how eSIM installation and activation work first.

Why Is My eSIM Not Working Abroad?

An eSIM usually stops working abroad because the eSIM line is turned off, it isn't selected for mobile data, data roaming is disabled, the phone hasn't connected to a supported local network, or the plan has expired or doesn't cover your destination. Turning on the line and data roaming, selecting the eSIM for data and restarting your phone fixes most cases.

Your eSIM Is Not Turned On

An installed eSIM can still be switched off. If the line is disabled, your phone won't connect to any network with it, even if the plan is active.

Your eSIM Is Not Selected for Mobile Data

On a dual SIM phone, mobile data only comes from one line at a time. If your home SIM is still the data line, your phone won't use the travel eSIM for internet.

Data Roaming Is Turned Off

Most travel eSIMs connect to local partner networks abroad, which your phone treats as roaming. If data roaming is off for the eSIM, you'll often see signal but have no internet, which is the most common cause of travel eSIM no internet issues.

Your Phone Is Not Connecting to a Supported Local Network

Your phone may try to stay on a network that your eSIM plan doesn't support. This is a common reason for an eSIM not connecting abroad, especially right after landing or when crossing a border.

Your APN Settings Are Missing or Incorrect

The APN tells your phone how to reach the internet through the mobile network. Most eSIMs set it automatically, but if it's missing or wrong, the connection can fail.

Your eSIM Plan Is Not Active or Does Not Cover Your Destination

Some plans only activate when you connect in a covered country. If the plan doesn't include the country you're in, the eSIM won't connect there.

Your Data Plan Has Expired or Run Out of Data

A plan that has reached its data limit or validity date may still show signal, but the internet stops working.

Your Phone Is Carrier-Locked or Does Not Support eSIM

A phone locked to your home carrier may block other providers' eSIMs. You can also check that your model is on our list of eSIM-compatible devices.

Another SIM or Data Switching Setting Is Interfering

Automatic data switching can move your mobile data back to your home SIM without you noticing, especially when the eSIM signal is weak.

Quick Checks When Your eSIM Stops Working After You Land

Landed and your travel eSIM isn't connecting? Don't worry. Most eSIM issues come down to a simple setting and take less than a minute to fix. Run through these 5 quick checks before anything else.

Make Sure the eSIM Line Is Turned On

Open your cellular or SIM settings and check that your travel eSIM line is enabled.

Select Your Travel eSIM for Mobile Data

Make sure the eSIM, not your home SIM, is chosen as the mobile data line.

Turn On Data Roaming for the eSIM

Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM line only. Keep it off for your home SIM.

Make Sure Airplane Mode Is Off

It sounds obvious, but many travelers leave airplane mode on after the flight and only reconnect Wi-Fi.

Check That Your Plan Covers Your Current Country

Confirm that the country you're in is included in your plan. You can check available eSIM destinations and their coverage on our website.

How to Fix an eSIM That Is Not Working Abroad

Quick checks didn't fix it? Follow these steps in order. They work for short trips and longer stays alike, whenever your international eSIM isn't working abroad.

1. Turn Your eSIM Off and Back On

Switching the eSIM line off for a few seconds and back on forces it to reconnect to the network.

2. Select the eSIM as Your Mobile Data Line

Double-check the mobile data setting and pick your travel eSIM.

3. Enable Data Roaming on Your Travel eSIM

Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Without it, the eSIM usually can't use local partner networks.

4. Toggle Airplane Mode and Restart Your Phone

Turn airplane mode on for about 10 seconds, then off. If that doesn't help, restart your phone so it searches for networks again.

5. Manually Select a Supported Mobile Network

Turn off automatic network selection and choose a network from the list. If one doesn't work, try another, then switch back to automatic once you're connected.

6. Check Your APN Settings

If your eSIM provider gave you APN details, check that they're entered exactly as provided. If not, leave the APN as set automatically.

7. Check Your Data Balance, Plan Validity, and Destination Coverage

Check how much data you have left, whether the plan is still valid and whether it covers your current country.

8. Disable Cellular Data Switching or Mobile Data on Your Primary SIM

Turn off automatic data switching and make sure your home SIM isn't used for data. For the full setup, see our guide on how to use dual SIM with an eSIM.

9. Update Your Phone or Reset Network Settings

Install any pending software update. As a last resort, reset network settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN and APN settings, but it normally doesn't remove your eSIM. If your phone offers an option to also delete eSIMs, don't select it.

10. Contact Your eSIM Provider Before Deleting the eSIM

Don't delete the eSIM to try reinstalling it. Most eSIM QR codes are single-use, so you may not be able to reinstall it. Contact your eSIM provider first. Enjoy eSIM's 24/7 support team can check your eSIM's status and help you get connected.

💡 Tip: With Enjoy eSIM, you can install your eSIM before your trip and check your remaining data in the app, so you know your plan is ready the moment you land.

eSIM Not Working Abroad on iPhone

Menu names can differ slightly by iOS version and region (Cellular or Mobile Data).

Check That Your eSIM Is Turned On

Go to Settings > Cellular, tap your travel eSIM and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled.

Select Your eSIM for Cellular Data

Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and choose your travel eSIM.

Enable Data Roaming

In Settings > Cellular, tap your travel eSIM and turn on Data Roaming.

Check Network Selection

In Settings > Cellular, tap your travel eSIM, then Network Selection. Turn off Automatic and choose a network from the list.

Check Cellular Data Switching

On the Cellular Data screen, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so your iPhone doesn't use your home SIM for data.

Reset Network Settings If Needed

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Use this only after the steps above, and contact your eSIM provider first if you're unsure.

eSIM Not Working Abroad on Android

Menu names vary by brand and Android version. The paths below are for Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones.

Enable Your eSIM in SIM Manager

Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager on Samsung or Settings > Network & internet > SIMs on Pixel and make sure your travel eSIM is turned on.

Select the eSIM for Mobile Data

In the same menu, set your travel eSIM as the SIM for mobile data.

Enable Data Roaming

On Samsung, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks and turn on Data roaming. On Pixel, tap your eSIM under SIMs and turn on Roaming.

Manually Select a Network Operator

On Samsung, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators and turn off automatic selection. On Pixel, tap your eSIM under SIMs and turn off Automatically select network. Then pick a network from the list.

Check APN Settings

On Samsung, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. On Pixel, tap your eSIM under SIMs > Access point names. Make sure the APN matches the one from your eSIM provider, if one was provided.

Reset Mobile Network Settings If Needed

On Samsung, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset mobile network settings. On Pixel, go to Settings > System > Reset options and choose the mobile network reset option. If your phone offers to erase eSIMs, don't select it.

eSIM Has Signal but No Internet Abroad

This is the classic eSIM no internet abroad problem. Signal bars only mean your phone can see a network, not that mobile data is working. If your eSIM has signal but no internet abroad, check data roaming, the mobile data line and your APN, and make sure your plan still has data left. Our guide on what to do when your eSIM is connected but has no internet covers every step in detail.

eSIM Shows No Service or SOS Abroad

An eSIM no service abroad issue shows up as "No Service" or "SOS": your phone can't register on a network your eSIM can use. Emergency calls may still work, but regular service doesn't.

Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn airplane mode on for about 10 seconds, then off, so your phone searches for networks again.

Restart Your Phone

A restart often clears a stuck network registration, especially right after a long flight.

Try Manual Network Selection

Turn off automatic network selection and pick a network from the list. Try each available network until one connects.

Check Whether Your Plan Covers the Destination

If your plan doesn't include the country you're in, the eSIM won't be able to connect. Check your plan details or contact your eSIM provider.

eSIM Installed but Not Activating Abroad

Confirm You Have Arrived in a Covered Destination

Many travel eSIMs only activate once they connect to a supported network in a covered country. If you installed the eSIM before your trip, it usually activates automatically after you land.

Connect to Wi-Fi If Activation Requires Internet

If the eSIM hasn't fully downloaded or activated yet, connect to Wi-Fi so your phone can finish the process. If the QR code doesn't work, see our guide on fixing an eSIM QR code that is not working.

Turn On the eSIM and Data Roaming

Make sure the eSIM line is on, selected for mobile data and has data roaming enabled.

Restart Your Device and Try Again

Restart your phone and wait a few minutes. If the eSIM still doesn't activate, see our guide on what to do when your eSIM is not activating.

Signal only means your phone sees a network. Check that data roaming is on for the eSIM, the eSIM is your mobile data line, the APN is correct and you still have data left.

Does data roaming need to be on for a travel eSIM?

In most cases, yes. Travel eSIMs connect to local partner networks, which your phone treats as roaming. Turn it on for the eSIM line only.

Your phone can't register on a network your eSIM can use. Toggle airplane mode, restart your phone, try manual network selection and check that your plan covers the country.

Why is my eSIM not connecting to a local network?

Your phone may be trying to use a network your plan doesn't support. Turn off automatic network selection and choose another network from the list.
